Tibetan Monks Create Ceremonial Sand Mandala

Tibetan Monks Create Ceremonial Sand Mandala

Telfair proudly announces the return of the Tibetan monks of Drepung Loseling Monastery to the museum to create a healing sand mandala at the Telfair Academy. The monks last visited Telfair in 2016 and are one of the museum’s most frequently requested programs. The opening program begins with sacred music and chants, after which the lamas (monks) begin by drawing the mandala’s outline on a wooden platform. On the following three days, the lamas will create the mandala by painstakingly pouring the sand from traditional metal funnels called chak-purs. At completion the monks will conduct a closing ceremony and the mandala will be deconstructed as a metaphor of the impermanence of life. The sands are swept up and placed in an urn. To fulfill the function of healing, half is distributed to the audience, while the remainder is carried to the Savannah River.

Due to limited seating, the opening and closing events are ticketed with discounts to Telfair members. During the mandala construction days admission is free to members.

Soon, a mysterious organization called "The 39 Steps" is hot on the man’s trail in a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale! A riotous blend of virtuoso performances and wildly inventive stagecraft, The 39 Steps amounts to an unforgettable evening of pure pleasure!

Horseshoe Crab Encounters

Horseshoe Crab Encounters

Every spring horseshoe crabs congregate on beaches along the east coast to lay their eggs. These spawning events attract migratory shorebirds that utilize the horseshoe crab eggs to fuel their annual flight to nesting grounds in the Arctic. Join us for a guided beach walk on Tybee Island to experience this unique, seasonal phenomenon along the Georgia coast. Children 10 years or older are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

What to bring:
- Hiking shoes you do not mind getting dirty
- Snacks

The best time to find horseshoe crabs spawning on nearshore beaches is during high tides on full/new moons. Because high tides in May are during the evening, our walk will take place on Tybee Island at night from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Please meet us at the Tybee Island Marine Science Center at 6:25 p.m. for a brief presentation before we begin our walk (note: a $4.00 parking fee will be required).

Cost: $20. Registration is required. This program is open to all ages, but children must be accompanied by an adult. Online registration will close at 4 p.m. the day before the event. Tickets are nonrefundable. Learn more: https://t.uga.edu/8Ub

Coastal Flora and Fauna Art Exhibit

  • UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join us for the Coastal Flora and Fauna Art Exhibit at the UGA Aquarium where you will discover the intersection of art and science and the unique beauty of the Georgia coast.

The exhibition will open April 29, 2023, and will feature 10 pieces created by students at Savannah College of Art and Design. The students were inspired by their visit to the UGA Aquarium on Skidaway Island, where they were introduced to marine life as well as coastal habitats and wildlife found on the facility’s nature trail which traverses maritime forest and salt marsh habitat.

On April 29 from 1 – 3 p.m. visitors will have the opportunity to view the student artwork and meet the artists to discuss their pieces and learn about the inspiration behind their work.

The collection will be on display at the UGA Aquarium from April 29 – May 27 before moving to the Gray’s Reef Ocean Discovery Center in downtown Savannah. The exhibition at the Discovery Center will run from June 4 where it will be on display until Sept. 3.

The exhibition viewing at the UGA Aquarium is included with the cost of admission.

BOLD EXPRESSIONS: THE COLLECTION OF LORLEE AND ARNOLD TENENBAUM

BOLD EXPRESSIONS: THE COLLECTION OF LORLEE AND ARNOLD TENENBAUM

Bold Expressions: The Collection of Lorlee and Arnold Tenenbaum celebrates collecting and living with original works of art through a presentation of the collection of the late Lorlee and Arnold Tenenbaum. Remembered for their business acumen, love of community, and generous philanthropic efforts, the Tenenbaums were deeply invested in art and education, which extended to their colossal efforts to raise funds to construct Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center.

The Tenenbaum collection defies categorization―crossing borders, time periods, styles, techniques, and mediums. Showcasing prints, paintings, drawings, and ceramics by artists such as Marc Chagall, Diego Rivera, Andy Warhol, Fritz Scholder, and Jaune Quick-to-See-Smith, the exhibition is at once a portrait of the individual and wide-ranging tastes of one couple, but also an exploration into what it means to love art and express oneself boldly and unabashedly through collecting. In addition to enjoying the variety of work and finding their favorites, visitors are encouraged to ponder the concept of collecting and displaying art in various domestic and museum settings—perhaps inspiring their own discovery of new artists. Ultimately, Bold Expressions honors the artists who enhance our lives and the local collectors whose passions support art and its makers.
