Horseshoe Crab Encounters

  • Tybee Island Marine Science Center 37 Meddin Drive Tybee Island, GA, 31328 United States (map)

Every spring horseshoe crabs congregate on beaches along the east coast to lay their eggs. These spawning events attract migratory shorebirds that utilize the horseshoe crab eggs to fuel their annual flight to nesting grounds in the Arctic. Join us for a guided beach walk on Tybee Island to experience this unique, seasonal phenomenon along the Georgia coast. Children 10 years or older are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

What to bring:
- Hiking shoes you do not mind getting dirty
- Snacks

The best time to find horseshoe crabs spawning on nearshore beaches is during high tides on full/new moons. Because high tides in May are during the evening, our walk will take place on Tybee Island at night from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Please meet us at the Tybee Island Marine Science Center at 6:25 p.m. for a brief presentation before we begin our walk (note: a $4.00 parking fee will be required).

Cost: $20. Registration is required. This program is open to all ages, but children must be accompanied by an adult. Online registration will close at 4 p.m. the day before the event. Tickets are nonrefundable. Learn more: https://t.uga.edu/8Ub
