EARTH ANGEL

It’s hard to miss the large, shiny sculpture soaring over your head when you enter the Jepson Center’s atrium. Titled Earth Angel, the reflective butterfly is a site-specific installation by the collaborative Los Angeles-based duo FriendsWithYou, aka artists Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III. Their overarching goal is to connect us to each other and ourselves, spreading friendship and building community around the world. Earth Angel is a new character in their longform conceptual project to unite humanity by renaming our planet Ocean. It represents a visiting creature from beyond the heavens to Ocean who is the embodiment of vibrational harmony. The mirror-like surface symbolizes the universal totality present in everything and invites us to see ourselves in this mythological character—distorted, transformed, and anew.

Domestic Imaginaries Exhibition at the SCAD Museum of Art
Sep

to Dec 31

Domestic Imaginaries Exhibition at the SCAD Museum of Art

In his most ambitious exhibition to date, Tyler Mitchell displays photographs innovatively printed on textiles in an immersive, laundry line installation alongside new “altar” sculptures. Strung from a zig-zagging clothesline, Threads of Memory is Mitchell’s latest iteration of the iconic form, stretching nearly 300 feet along the unique gallery space and framing its historic 1850s Savannah Gray brick archways. The hanging textile prints depict pastoral scenes and Black bodies, drawing inspiration from Gordon Parks’ photography and the landscape of the southeastern U.S., where Mitchell was born and raised. Complementing this dramatic, enveloping experience, Mitchell’s sculptures reference historic domestic objects with subtle alterations and embedded photographs, evoking memory and belonging in ways that are deeply personal. The exhibition’s poetic nature articulates a sensitivity and attentiveness to the quieter moments of life and the potential for beauty and transformation in things that may otherwise seem ordinary. Combining installation, sculpture, and photography, the artist invites us to consider our own relationship to the image, our environments, and each other.

MILES DAVIS: BIRTH OF COOL

MONDAY SEPTEMBER 18 AT 7:00 PM

PRESENTED BY

SAVANNAH JAZZ

Join the director and Davis family members for a special screening of Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool, co-presented by Savannah Jazz. Telling the story of the legendary trumpeter, bandleader, innovator and trend-setter who crossed musical genres and whose life was notable on and off stage, the film from award-winning documentary Stanley Nelson, features Miles Davis’ music from live performances, studio recordings and outtakes, as well as interviews with those who knew Miles best (Quincy Jones, Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter, and others).

A Q&A with director Stanley Nelson; Vince Wilburn, Jr., nephew of the late Miles Davis and leader of ‘M.E.B.’ the Miles Electric Band; and Erin Davis, Miles’ son who heads the Miles Davis Artists Group will immediately follow the screening.

Tickets for the screening are free for SCAD Card holders and $14 for the general public.

ABOUT STANLEY NELSON:
Nelson’s films combine compelling narratives on the African-American experience with rich historical detail to shine new light on the under-explored American past. Among his awards are the MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, five Primetime Emmy Awards, and lifetime achievement awards from the Emmys and IDA. In 2013, Nelson received the National Medal in the Humanities from President Obama. In 2019, Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool was nominated by the GRAMMYs for Best Music Film and went on to win two Emmy® Awards at the 42nd Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards.

Labor Day Fireworks Show

Annual Labor Day Fireworks show

Sunday, September 3rd. Just after dark!

Continuing our years long tradition! With Safety in Mind, the causeway will be a great place to park and watch the show with the family from your car, or if you so choose, watch from the Marina. In addition, we’ll have BC Deputies on site to help with traffic safety. Fort McAllister State Historic Park is another great place to watch. The park requires only a $5.00 per car fee and it’s another great place for an evening Picnic with the family. Of course, if you have a boat, the water is an excellent place to safely view the show. This is our way of giving back to the community that has supported us in so many ways over the years - we thank you and hope you enjoy the show!!
Special Thanks to the folks at Southern Eagle GA for making this possible, they’ll be there with plenty of “swag”.

Coastal Heritage Society Presents The 2022 Revolutionary Perspectives Virtual Lecture Series

Coastal Heritage Society invites the public to virtually attend this year’s Revolutionary Perspectives Lecture Series on Sept. 20th, Sept. 27th, and Oct. 4th. The annual free event series will focus on a wide variety of topics unique to the history of Savannah. Lectures will be hosted on Facebook Live on the Coastal Heritage Society Facebook page. Each lecture will be from 7-7:45 pm with a 15-minute question and answer session ending at 8 pm.

“The most exciting thing for me about history is the element of discovery, and for this year’s Revolutionary Perspectives Series, we are focusing on that process of discovery!” says Emily Beck, Director of Interpretation at Coastal Heritage Society, and this year’s facilitator.  “Historian and filmmaker Michael Jordan will present his best-selling book, Savannah Square by Square, highlighting the hidden histories of Savannah’s beautiful squares. US Army Corps of Engineers Archaeologist Andrea Farmer will outline the process of finding Revolutionary War-era cannon in the Savannah River in the fall of 2021, and let us know a bit more about what is in store for this historic find. We are also thrilled to welcome back Dr. Howard Keeley of Georgia Southern University’s Center for Irish Research and Teaching, will speak about new research that he and his students conducted in Ireland over the summer, shedding new light on Irish immigration in Savannah’s historic Frogtown community and its surrounding neighborhoods.”

The first lecture, on Sept. 20th, will be presented by Michael Jordan, historian, author, and filmmaker. Jordan’s lecture, “Savannah’s Squares: Historic by Design,” will discuss the jewels in Savannah’s crown: her beautiful historic squares. Michael is the co-author of Savannah Square by Square, a popular coffee table book recently republished by Coastal Heritage Society. Michael will reveal the stories behind Savannah’s squares – their namesakes, interesting stories associated with several of the squares, and startling reminders of just how close we came to losing these unique urban treasures.

ELEGIES: STILL LIFES IN CONTEMPORARY ART

Elegies: Still Lifes in Contemporary Art is a group exhibition bringing together an international collection of artists who have disrupted or extended the traditional presentation of still lifes. The artists have appropriated the genre in order to create works within a framework of Black diasporic identities, histories, and collective experiences. Their works are expressed through various mediums, including painting, photography, sculpture, printmaking, performance, and installation. Many of the artists are primarily known for portraiture, making these still lifes compelling outliers in their practices. A central discourse in this exhibition considers Blackness in relation to the existential question, “How does an artist create work about the body without the body being present?” resulting in political, historical, and art historical interventions. Elegies is a thematic exhibition that presents two parallel narratives: one is an art historical examination of still lifes, and the other is how that history is connected to Black figuration.
